I client came in with the news that she needed an MRI to find out if her shoulder muscle had torn. She had been in pain and it limited her range of motion. While on the table, I asked her about her needs for fitness. She is an avid tennis player as well as runner, both of which she enjoyed just for the sake of doing them. She stated that she had a wish for strength and that weightlifting was the only way to become stronger. She really didn’t like weightlifting and thought that she had to endure it to get stronger. According to her doctor, weightlifting was the cause of her shoulder pain, which in turn limited her ability to play tennis and she was too sore to even run. She couldn’t do the things she loved because of this other belief about a limited path to strength. With this belief, she was in too much pain to do the things she loved and then the goal of strength couldn’t be met. She was frustrated Once she understood that her strategy to get strong was impeding her overall desire for health and wellness, she decided to find another way to reach her goal. We brainstormed other possible strengthening activities that could meet her goals and be enjoyable as well. She came up with the benefits of yoga and is pursuing a class at her gym. She got the MRI and they found no tear. Physical therapy is helping to strengthen the shoulders and the therapist has given her easy exercises.
Take Away from this story:
Sometimes the strategies we take to reach goals don’t match all of our needs. Learn to listen to your body. Pain is its language. Life is short. Find a fun way to reach your goals of health and wellness. Align your goals with your activities.
A great book for this is The Intrinsic Exerciser by Jay Kimiecik. He outlines three motivations for exercise:
1. It has to feel good
2. It is enjoyable
3. It keeps your mind in the present moment.
Use this as your guide when you are looking for ways to reach your goals of health and wellness through movement.
